The constraint

Generation capacity is not scarce in the United States. Capacity that connects on a date a data center can underwrite is scarce. Everything required to deliver power at the Energy Park sits inside one property boundary, which is why the date holds.

Pronghorn operates a coalbed methane field across 1,014,032 acres of leasehold in Wyoming’s Powder River Basin. Gas is produced there today. Water comes up with it. The roads, the gathering, the electric distribution and the field crew are already in daily use. On-site generation turns that fuel into power without a transmission queue, a third-party gas contract or a new land position.

What the position holds
  • Owned inputs. Fuel, water, surface and generation sit with one operator. Grid interconnection stays an option on top.
  • Infrastructure in service. 3,363 producing wells, 3,010 miles of gas gathering, 3,110 miles of water gathering, 2,533 miles of electric distribution and staffed yards. About $3.2 billion has been invested in this field, predominantly by predecessor operators.
  • Grid access on top. Several 40 MW sites can be served now on the lower-voltage system. About 300 MW is identified at Pumpkin Buttes, with interconnection indicated inside 24 months on a conservative basis.
  • Two ways out for the gas. Two third-party gathering headers reach within 1.5 miles and run in either direction.

Firm power at the fence, islanded from grid events, with grid interconnection retained as an option.

The cost position. Generation sits upstream of the gathering chain. Each Mcf burned on site avoids about $0.55 of gathering and compression and $0.20 to $0.36 of treating. A merchant generator buying at a hub pays both, and carries the basis between the hub and the burner tip. Pronghorn buys nothing, so there is no basis to carry.

Why the queue matters

The bottleneck is interconnection

Announced generation is plentiful. Interconnection on an underwritable date is scarce. The median project completed in 2025 took more than five years from request to commercial operation, and of the capacity that requested interconnection between 2000 and 2020, 13% reached operation while 75% was withdrawn.

The same constraint has now reached load. ERCOT carries approximately 474 GW of large-load interconnection requests, roughly 90% of it data centers, more than five times its all-time peak demand of 91.1 GW set on 22 July 2026. In August 2026 Texas paused approvals for large loads in that queue pending a joint PUCT and ERCOT audit of power draw, water use and incentives. No completion date was stated.

The pause reaches projects sitting in the ERCOT large-load queue. The first criterion of the audit is whether a project supplies its own power or draws it from the grid. Grid dependence is what is under examination, and a campus generating behind the meter on its own fuel never enters that process.

Northeast Wyoming, between Buffalo and Gillette

The Energy Park sits on Pronghorn’s northern acreage in Campbell County, three and a half miles south of Interstate 90. This is an established energy corridor. 230 kV transmission, interstate gas pipelines and long-haul fiber all pass through it, and the contractor base built around coal and gas is already here.
